Books for All: Adobe Acrobat and PDF Files
Ref: BA2
"Literacy is fundemental to all areas of learning" but for many pupils with additional support needs, literacy is a struggle. 'Books for All' courses focus on creating and using accessible resources to enable pupils with additional support needs greater independent access to the curriculum, which schools and local authorities are obliged to do.
Schools and local authorities are obliged to consider how they can provide learning resources in accessible formats for pupils with disabilities. Recent changes to the CLA (Copyright Licensing Agency) Licence make it easier for schools to adapt resources for pupils with dyslexia and other reading and writing difficulties. 'Books for All' courses focus on creating and using accessible resources to enable pupils with additional support needs greater independent access to the curriculum.
PDF (Portable Document Format) is probably the most common digital format in the world and properly prepared PDFs can be very accessible for pupils with disabilities. Poorly prepared PDFs can be a disaster in terms of accessibility.
Teachers who are creating electronic resources for eLearning, eAssessment and for sharing through Glow need to take into account good practice and accessibility standards to ensure that pupils with disabilities can access materials and to meet duties under the DDA.
This hand-on course teaches techniques for creating accessible learning materials in PDF using Acrobat Pro. We will look at techniques for scanning and OCR (Optical character recognition) of paper materials; structuring digital books for easy navigation; and methods for making interactive worksheets and assessments. The course is of particular interest to staff who are creating accessible materials for the Scottish Books for All Database.
This course will also cover copyright issues.
