What's the course about?

Schools and local authorities are obliged under disability equality legislation to consider how they can provide learning resources in accessible formats for pupils with disabilities. This hands-on course provides an introduction to making books and resources in a range of accessible formats for pupils with visual, physical or learning difficulties and also pupils with dyslexia.

For primary and secondary pupils, we will use Microsoft Word to create structured ‘intermediate files’ which can then be easily converted into a variety of accessible formats including Large and Adapted Print, PDF and Daisy, and audio. We will practice scanning paper books into Word. We will use Audacity to create recorded versions of materials.

We will also create accessible versions of picture books for early years and pupils with more severe and complex difficulties, using Powerpoint.

The course will address Copyright and licensing when making accessible copies of books.

Participants should have good working knowledge of Microsoft Word 2007 or 2010.
